In a recent interview, Dr R Shekhar, consultant, Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon at Kokilaben Dhirubai Ambani Hospital and Medical Research Institute, Mumbai spoke about the latest advancements in the field of wound care. He said that in Indian scenario wound care continues to be a challenge because there are not too many people willing to take up the task of healing a wound. India ranks second in the world in terms of people affected with type 2 diabetes and this has made the treatment of foot complications of diabetes (diabetic foot) a much bigger challenge in India.

He however, said that there are some new methods to heal these wounds and some wound care products are also freely available in the country and patients have easy access to them. He emphasized that despite the current lag, the future of wound care is bright and many people are getting into this field. With the advent of newer wound care products, and the increased awareness about how important wound care is in the final outcome of the patient, it is no longer a mere sub-speciality for the younger generation of doctors.
